Cromwell Street Repaving 18 August 2008

Repaving work at Cromwell Street in Stornoway under the Townscape Heritage Initiative is expected to be completed over the next couple of months.

As well as repaving the street new litter bins have been installed to complement the paving and new seats to replace those situated outside the Town Hall will be installed in the near future.

The addition of the small engraved plaques, set into the paving outside each property, has also proved popular adding more interest to the town centre and giving an insight into the fascinating and varied history of the town. The Historical Society is in the process of compiling a leaflet giving even more details on each property. The leaflet will be made readily available for both tourists and residents alike to learn more about the town’s past commercial activity.

Unfortunately it has not proved possible to fully complete the project before the summer season as originally planned. Although most of the paving work has been completed and some of the street furniture installed, it has not been possible to install the replacement of ‘the pyramid’ or complete the repaving adjacent to it. The Comhairle has had difficulties with securing delivery of components integral to the feature which has meant that construction work has unfortunately had to be delayed. To avoid unsightly fenced off areas and part completed construction works, work on this part of the site was halted.

Now that these issues have been overcome work on this part of the project should start in the next few weeks with the rest of the repaving work following on. It is intended that that the project will be fully complete in 4-6 weeks.
