Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is taking action to improve canteen facilities at The Nicolson Institute in a move which will provide dining facilities for another 200 pupils in the interim period until the new school is built.

Cllr Morag Munro, Chair of the Education and Children’s Services Committee commented “I am very pleased about this.  It is evident that it has been a matter of concern to many parents and if the potential to address the matter exists then it is right that we should do so. I would also hope that these new facilities will encourage pupils to stay and eat healthy meals in the school.”

The move takes account of concerns expressed by parents during the recent round of consultation meetings on future provision of secondary education.

At the last meeting of the Education and Children’s Services Committee members decided to recommend to the Comhairle that a building should be leased for the additional canteen facilities.

It is estimated that this provision will cost an additional £82,000 per year. It will be financed from savings in the Education budget.
