On Thursday (28th March 2001), Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar Convener, Alex A Macdonald, will present the award for the "Western Isles Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year, 2002". Six of the Isles' most promising young businesses will be competing for the title, as well as substantial cash prizes.
Each of the six finalists will be interviewed, and their businesses assessed by an experienced panel of judges, who will make the award on the basis of the viability and potential of the business, and the entrepreneurial qualities and business acumen of the owner. The judging panel will be chaired this year by Councillor Donald MacLean, Development Services Chairman.
The local winner will receive a substantial cash prize (to be revealed on the day) as well as their Award Certificate from the Convener. The winner will also go forward to represent the Western Isles at the Scottish Shell LiveWIRE Final, to be held this year at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on Tuesday 23rd April, where the top prize is to be £3,000. If successful at that level they will also compete at the UK Final in London in June for the £10,000 first prize, and the title of "Shell LiveWIRE UK Entrepreneur of the Year." However, ALL the local finalists will receive a cash prize on the day.
Shell LiveWIRE is an international scheme, which helps young people aged 16 - 30 to start up and develop their own business. The scheme is co-ordinated locally by Jane Campbell, of Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar's Business Advantage team. Shell LiveWIRE has helped over 100,000 people in the UK who considered starting their own businesses since it was launched by Shell in 1982. The competition is supported locally by Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in addition to national sponsorship by Shell UK Limited.
