‘A Fresh Start For Gaelic’ - Now Is The Time For Action

Commenting on the publication of ‘A Fresh Start For Gaelic’, the Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Roddy Murray, said: “The Comhairle welcomes the publication of this report. A lot of time and energy has gone into its preparation and the consultation process has brought contributions from all sectors of the Gaelic community. The report provides a foundation for the future of our language and it is essential that action is now taken with the greatest degree of urgency.

Whilst welcoming the establishment of Bord Na Gaidhlig, the Comhairle is disappointed that the Headquarters is recommended to be located in Inverness rather than a predominantly Gaelic speaking area. It is however hoped that the bulk of the development work will take place in Gaelic heartland areas of the language such as the Western Isles.

There has been much debate and discussion about the future of Gaelic since Alasdair Morrison, the then Minister for Gaelic, established the Macpherson task Force in 1999. Now is the time for action. Our language and our culture are at the final crossroads. If this opportunity is not seized, there will be no second chance”.
