Comhairle nan Eilean Siar PRESS RELEASE 28 June 2002 For Use: Immediately |

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar today welcomed the commitments given by the Scottish Executive in the tendering proposals for Western Isles ferry services.
The Comhairles Chairman of Transportation, Cllr. Norman A. Macdonald, said: These ferry services play an absolutley essential role in the life of our communities. We therefore welcome the Scottish Executives commitment to maintaining lifeline links and enhancing services.
I particularly welcome the Executives commitment to a new Sound Of Barra service and the enhancement of the Sound Of Harris and Oban/Castlebay/Lochboisdale services.
The Comhairle and indeed all the public representatives for the Western Isles made the case for the Hebrides routes to be tendered in one bundle and I am pleased that the Executive and the European Commission accepted that that was the correct way to proceed.
Modern, reliable services with a reasonable and affordable fare structure is
the aim of the Scottish Executive. We share that aim - indeed it is vital for
the economic and social well being of our communities. The Comhairle will play
a full part in the consultation process and we look forward to meeting with
the Deputy Minister for Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning at an early
stage. The Comhairle will be undertaking a consultation exercise throughout
the Islands.
