INFECTION CONTROL TEAM MEETS

Around 20 cases of Diarrhoea and Vomiting have been reported in the Western Isles in recent days. These have been mainly limited to touring coach parties and at the moment are thought to be viral in origin.

Routine Investigations and Infection Control measures are being instituted.

Dr Mike George Director of Public Health with Western Isles NHS Board has said “The Western Isles have an Infection Control Team which has convened on three occasions so far regarding this matter and reassurance can be given that everything necessary to contain the situation is being done.”

Symptoms have tended to be self-limiting and mild lasting up to 24 hours. The main emphasis of treatment in those with symptoms is fluid replacement by drinking plenty of clear fluids such as water or lemonade to avoid dehydration.

Diarrhoea and vomiting is a common illness and when viral in origin it is usually passed on like colds and influenza. It should be sufficient for any members of the public who develop symptoms to follow the advice of fluid replacement. Anyone concerned that their symptoms may not be settling or that they may be dehydrated can contact their own GP for advice.
