Good News On Air Fares

13 August 2002

Following a meeting yesterday (12 August) with representatives of BA City Express, Chairman of the Comhairle's Transportation Committee, Councillor Norman A. Macdonald said -

"We had an extremely interesting and productive meeting with BA City Express regarding the level of fares and flexibility on their Glasgow/Stornoway and Glasgow/Benbecula routes. The Company have accepted the arguments which the Comhairle has put forward for quite some time regarding fare levels and I am confident that when the new fare structure is announced in the autumn we will see significant reductions in the cost of travel between Glasgow and Stornoway/Benbecula as well as the lifting of current restrictions requiring weekend stopovers.

This can only be good news for the people of the Islands and I would certainly encourage them to take maximum advantage of the new fares when they are introduced. The Comhairle will also be pressing the other operators to follow the lead given by BA City Express".

Councillor Macdonald added -

"I would also encourage as many people as possible to make use of the existing £89 offer for travel between Stornoway/Glasgow, Benbecula/Glasgow, and Stornoway/Edinburgh. This offer is still available".
