Car Crusher On The Move

20 August 2002

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s mobile car baler will be operating in the Uists for the first time during the week beginning 2 September.

The car crusher is the only one of its type in the UK and was specifically designed to deal with end-of life vehicles in remote areas as part of the Comhairle’s ongoing programme of recycling improvements.

Chairman of Environmental Services. Cllr. Angus Nicolson said;

“This is a major success story for the Comhairle. The mobile car baler which will be operating in the Uists has provided a low cost, locally based solution to dealing with scrap vehicles in the Western Isles.”

The Comhairle uplifts around 600 end of life vehicles per year, the third highest number for local authorities in Scotland.

The vehicle has a self-powered car baler with an integral tank to collect any fluids from the vehicles during the crushing operation. The unit is mounted onto an 8-wheeler lorry chassis and comes complete with hydraulic stabilising legs and its own loading grab. It can be ready to start work within half an hour of arriving on site.

The unit cost £110k, with 40% of the funding coming from the European HISTP programme.
