Trading Standards Issue Toy Safety Warning

11 September 2002

CNES Trading Standards Service today issued a warning to retailers and consumers alike about the potential danger posed by toys that fire projectiles with suction cups.

Following recent tragic deaths in Sweden and the UK the European Safety Standard for toys has been amended to outlaw projectiles with a suction cup that are shorter than 57mm in length. This is to minimise the risk of choking from such projectiles or darts.

Such toys are known to have been sold locally.

Retailers will need to remove from sale all products that do not meet the new dimensional requirements as soon as possible and by the 30th September at the latest. After that date these toys will be deemed not to meet the essential safety requirement of the 1995 Toys (Safety) Regulations.

Parents may wish to examine any toys that their children may have and how suitable they are given this recent information. The toys are usually "pocket money" type toys consisting of a plastic gun that fires small projectiles or darts with a sucker on the end.
