Cautious Welcome To Spending Review

13 September 2002

Commenting on the spending review announced by the Scottish Executive, the Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Roddy Murray said:

“The Comhairle is committed to improving services for people throughout the Western Isles and therefore welcomes the allocation of increased resources by the Scottish Executive to public services throughout Scotland. We would wish to see flexibility in how these resources can be spent by councils to tailor resources to the needs of specific areas. As we constantly remind the Executive, the Western Isles has specific and serious problems that need to be addressed if we are to secure a sustainable future for the people of these islands. We need government support and commitment in order to do that.

This latest announcement is good news for public services generally. In terms of council services my initial reaction is that it is a move in the right direction. I welcome the mainstreaming of the Better Neighbourhood Services Fund, the building of equality of life initiatives onto the base budget and the full recognition of National Insurance costs for local authorities. We await further details with interest & in the hope that council services can be boosted by the extra resources being provided.”
