Commenting on the announcement that the former
oil fabrication Yard at Arnish is to be a site of
wind tower manufacture, the Convener of Comhairle
nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Alex MacDonald, said:
"This is very welcome news for the Western
Isles. 65 manufacturing jobs will provide a major,
and much needed, boost to the local economy. When
the Comhairle launched the Energy Innovation Zone
this was exactly the sort of proposal that we were
keen to encourage. The Comhairle has been working
closely with our Community Planning partners to
make the Western Isles a centre of renewable energy
and this confirmation of Cambrian Engineerings
location at Arnish is a clear indication that we
are moving in the right direction. In addition to
Cambrians plans there are the proposals by
AMEC/British Energy and Wavegen as well as a series
of smaller scale projects. The potential of the
islands as a base for alternative energy developments
is at last beginning to be realised and this latest
announcement is a sign of the confidence that this
major company has in the future of the Islands as
a renewable energy centre. We hope this will be
the start of a build up of companies involved in
renewables that will create a sustainable base to
develop our communities for the future.
