Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is issuing guidelines on school transport
and safety to parents, pupils and bus operators in the Western Isles.
The booklet provides useful information and advice on using school
transport and reflects the high priority the Comhairle attaches
to pupil safety.
Chairman of Transportation, Cllr Norman A Macdonald, said: The
booklet has been published to provide all those involved in school
transport with guidelines and information on the safety of pupils
when using these services. I would urge parents, pupils and operators
to read these safety messages and to follow the guidelines. We have
also separately issued notes to operators, for them to pass on to
their drivers, giving specific guidelines regarding pupils getting
on and off buses.
Every school day over 4,000 pupils attend 41 schools in the Western
Isles. 70% of all pupils travel free to and from school on transport
provided by the Comhairle.
Education Chairman Cllr. Norman L Macdonald said: The safety
of our pupils is of paramount importance and I very much welcome
the publication of these guidelines which will benefit parents,
pupils and operators.
