Various companies are contacting local traders in the Western Isles
and asking for an £85 fee for registration as a data controller
with the Data Protection Commissioner.
The companies go under names such as Data Protection Act Registration
Service, Data Protection Agency Services Ltd., Data Collection Enforcement
Agency and similar titles.
The letters appear formal and quote hefty fines for non-registration.
The advice of Trading Standards is to ignore these letters.
The Information Commissioner, Elizabeth France, has expressed concern
about the letters and has stated that there is no connection between
her Office and these businesses.
You can check if your business requires to be registered by telephoning
The Data Protection Commissioner on 0870 9027522 or online at http://www.dpr.gov.uk.
Registration costs £35.
