Comhairle nan Eilean Siars Chairman of Environmental Services,
Cllr. Angus Nicolson, has welcomed news that the European Commission
has given assurances that livestock will not be prevented from being
carried at sea in winds above force 5.
The Commissions Scientific Committee had recommended such
a move. The Comhairle has lobbied extensively on the matter which
would have had severe consequences for the crofting community of
the Islands had it gone ahead.
Speaking today, Environmental Services Chairman Cllr. Angus Nicolson,
said: This is good news for the Western Isles, particularly
for the crofting community which would have been hard hit by the
new regulations. The Comhairle campaigned extensively on this issue
and I am delighted that we have been successful in our efforts to
make the Commission see sense. Much of the export of livestock from
these islands takes place during the winter months when Force 5
winds can be expected. Whilst animal welfare is an important matter,
we are of the view that sea condition and the type of vessel are
far more important considerations than simple wind speed. I would
like to thank all MEPs who supported us in our efforts to persuade
the Commission of our case.
