Comhairle Aims For ‘More People, More Active, More Often’

2 December 2002

Free inductions and personal programmes at fitness centres, free public swimming and free swimming lessons. These are just some of the attractions on offer at Western Isles Sports Centres over the next four months.

The Health and Exercise Access Project is a result of the additional allocation of Scottish Executive funds. It will be phased in from the 9th December and run until the end of March.

Cllr. Alasdair Macrae, Chairman of Arts and Leisure, said: "The Comhairle was successful in securing funding from the Scottish Executive for this project which is designed to make a real impact on the capacity of people of all ages living in the Western Isles to adopt a healthy active lifestyle."

The Project is designed to support people who wish to take part in exercise.

Principal Officer for Sport and Health, Emma Matheson said: “Through providing free inductions and programmes at the fitness suites, we hope to attract individuals who have previously lacked the confidence or incentive to become a user of this type of facility. The individual programmes will provide the valuable support required to focus clients and greatly assist new users in building up their exercise programme. Likewise, the free swimming lessons are targeted at existing non-users of the swimming pools. The lessons build up the confidence and water skills of the clients and provide the opportunity for current non-swimmers to become more confident to enjoy swimming as a healthy leisure based activity. The free public sessions are to encourage the public to come and enjoy the swimming facilities available at the various pools throughout the islands.”

Free inductions will be available from 9th December at Sgoil Lionacleit and the Nicolson Lewis Sports Centre to individuals aged 16 and over who wish to use the fitness suite facilities. The induction process familiarises clients with the use of equipment and provides some basic suggestions for an exercise programme.

If people wish to have an exercise programme designed specifically to meet their needs, they can have this service provided by sportscentre staff. Due to the demand for inductions at Lionacleit, this personal service will be phased in during January.

All Comhairle operated swimming pools will be offering some free public sessions for the duration of the project. The specified sessions will be free to all public users. The times of the free sessions will be advertised locally.

Comhairle sportscentre staff will be providing free swimming lessons for children and adults from January. The lessons will take place at the main sportscentres and are designed to develop water confidence and a variety of swimming skills regardless of age or experience. Places will need to be reserved in advance.

All aspects of the project are subject to availability and the standard conditions for users apply.
