Commenting on the Energy Minister's announcement that a company
is set to manufacture wind towers at the Arnish yard, the Convener
of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Alex MacDonald, said: This
is, of course, extremely welcome news for the Western Isles. We
have come a long way from 1999 when Arnish closed and I would pay
tribute to the Stornoway Trust, HIE and WIE for the faith they have
shown in the potential future of the yard. This will be a new start
and hopefully it will be just the first contract to be followed
by others in the near future. For some time we have recognised the
potential of the renewables industry for the Western Isles and I
am delighted at the prospect of Arnish as a centre for renewable
energy manufacturing.
