Following confirmation by the Depute Minister of Transport Lewis MacDonald on 20 March 2003 that the Barra - Glasgow air service will be secured until March 2006 the Comhairle has been able to award the Inter Island Air Service contracts. The Benbecula - Barra contract has been awarded until March 2004 at a price of £144,910.00 to Loganair Ltd. A report will be considered by the first Transportation Committee of the new Comhairle with respect to the tendering of the Benbecula - Barra service until March 2006. A three year contract has also been awarded for the Stornoway - Benbecula route to Highland Airways in the sum of £172,000 for the first year. Chairman of the Comhairle’s Transportation Committee Norman A MacDonald said “We are pleased to have reached a satisfactory resolution of the Barra air services with the Scottish Executive which has enabled the award of the Stornoway - Benbecula and the Benbecula - Barra contracts.
