An innovative partnership scheme which has the potential to transform the delivery
of museum services in the Western Isles has been awarded £101,211 from the
Scottish Museums Council and the Scottish Executive. Links - Partnership
for Change is intended to increase museum audiences in the Western Isles
and to promote access to the cultural heritage of the islands through the development
of new community partnerships. Cultural heritage has been identified as
a key economic driver for the Western Isles in the economic regeneration strategy
'Creating Communities of the Future'. The Museums service, Sgioba Na Gaidhlig,
Social Work and Education departments of the Comhairle will work with the 23 Comann
Eachdraidh, the Western Isles Health Board, the arts and further education sectors
on the partnership project. Gaelic will be at the core of plans to develop joint
strategies and models for collections management, education, access and interpretation. Scottish
Museums Council Director, Jane Ryder, said 'This visionary project has the potential
to transform future museum service delivery in the Western Isles- placing Gaelic
and indigenous culture at the heart of planning. The Awards Panel were impressed
by the wide-ranging partnerships between the public and voluntary sector in the
form of the Comunn Eachdraidh, and the great commitment partners show to expanding
access to cultural heritage for all parts of the community in the Western Isles.' ENDS
