Comhairle Elections 2003

7 April 2003

There will be contested elections in 16 of the 31 wards on Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. 15 candidates are unopposed and will be declared elected at 11.00 am on Thursday 1 May 2003. List of Candidates - Comhairle Elections 2003

A total of 49 candidates were validly nominated at the close of the nomination period at 4.00 pm on Monday 7 April 2003 and of these 31 will stand as independent, or with no description, 8 are standing as Scottish Labour Party candidates and 6 as Scottish National Party (SNP) candidates. Details of the candidates validly nominated are enclosed.

Of the 31 existing Members of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar 25 candidates are seeking re-election with 6 Councillors standing down.

In 1999, 19 out of 31 seats were contested whilst in 1994 the figure was 15 out of 30.

Where elections are contested, the hours of polling will be between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm on Thursday 1 May 2003, with polling being combined with the Elections for the Scottish Parliament. The Count for the Comhairle Elections will be held on Friday 2 May 2003, starting at 12.00 noon, with counts for contested seats in Lewis and Harris being held in the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway and counts for contested seats in Uist and Barra being held at Sgoil Lionacleit. The counts and declarations are expected to be completed by late afternoon.
