Police
in Stornoway are investigating a recent spate of vandalism at Lews
Castle involving thousands of pounds worth of damage to windows,
floodlights and parts of the building interior.
The most recent event occurred on Sunday or Monday of this week
when the building was entered through a broken window. The building
owners Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are now putting in place new security
provisions in consultation with the police.
Speaking on behalf of Lews Castle Trust - the organisation set up
recently to promote the repair and redevelopment of the Castle -
Cllr Norman L Macdonald said:
"There have been several such incidents recently and there
has been considerable and costly damage to the Castle. We are now
proposing new security measures, including CCTV to combat vandalism
in and around the Castle.
Mr Macdonald added:
"Lews Castle is an important asset for the community we would
appeal to the public to report anything suspicious to the police.
We are also concerned about the possibility of a serious accident
occurring - which is made more likely if alcohol is involved."
Before the latest damage, the Comhairle had cleaned and cleared
out the principal rooms of the castle in preparation for a forthcoming
marketing and publicity campaign by Lews Castle Trust aimed at attracting
partners to repair and develop the castle.
