'More People More Active More Often’ As Fitness Suite Opens

26 May 2003

Communities in the Uists will have the opportunity to be ‘more active more often’ as from this week, thanks to additional facilities at Sgoil Lionacleit.

A £245k extension to the school including a Fitness Suite, changing facilities and a community reception area will be officially opened this week.

The new facilities are the result of a partnership between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Health Board and Western Isles Enterprise who made a joint bid for funding from sportscotland.

Leisure staff at Lionacelit have undertaken Fitness Scotland training to be able to provide inductions for users and staff are also available to design personal exercise programmes - tailored to meet the needs of individuals. Staff are also taking part in a GP Referral Training course which will enable clients to be referred to the Fitness Suite by their GP to help with health promotion or as part of a healing process.

The mix of cardio-vascular and resistance equipment provides the opportunity for all levels of ability to use the facility and also caters for those wishing a specific training programme.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Chairman of Arts and Leisure Cllr. Calum Iain Graham said; “Raising activity levels is an important part of improving fitness levels throughout our communities. This is a major improvement to the facilities at Sgoil Lionacleit and I am delighted that the partnership between the Comhairle, the Health Board and the Enterprise Company has been successful in enhancing leisure and sports provision for local communities”.

The total cost of the new facility was shared by the partners with sportscotland giving £122,500, the Comhairle £65,000, WIHB £35,000 and WIE £15,000. Uist Councillors David Blaney, Ronnie Mackinnon, Donald Maclean and Archie Campbell used their ward funds to complete the funding package.

Sgoil Lionacleit opened in 1988 and provides the main leisure facilities for both school and local communities.
