The Language Planning Group (representation
form Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Comunn na Gàidhlig,
Gaelic Broadcasting Committee and Lews Castle College in conjunction
with Gaelic Language and Culture Forum) has appointed Margaret
A MacKay as Language Planning Co-ordinator for the Western
Isles.
Margaret (22) from Ness, Lewis, graduates with LLB Law and
Gaelic (Hons) from Glasgow University and commenced work on
Monday 9 June. The work is based in the Gaelic Department
of Lews Castle College, and she will work closely with the
organisations on the Language and Culture Forum.
This work was established with financial support from LEADER+,
Western Isles Enterprise, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Comunn
na Gàidhlig and the co-ordinator will be responsible
for the co-ordination of the language plan. |
John Angus MacKay, Chairman of the Working Group said: “
We are pleased to have appointed some-one who is so appropriately
qualified to meet the demands of the job. This is an important appointment
in terms Gaelic language planning in the Western Isles in future
years.
Notes for Editors
The main aims of this project are:
- Gaining experience of the public bodies located in the Western
Isles and research their position in terms of Gaelic policies
- Detailed research on the 2001 Census in relation to Gaelic
- Arranging a seminar early on in the project with direction
for a language planning expert
- Holding a Meeting in the Autumn with Home Visitors to give
them information on Research on Gaelic in the Community
- Preparing a questionnaire which will be distributed through
the Home Visiting Scheme (September – December)
- Carry out a detailed study of the Questionnaire and preparing
a Language Plan (January – April 2004)
- Prepare a bid, which will go to Bòrd na Gàidhlig
in April 2004 for a Language Planning Project, which would last
5 years.
