| Young people in the Western
Isles are attending their local pools in record numbers. A partnership
between the New Community Schools, CNES Sport and Health and NHS
Western Isles Health Promotion Department have been offering primary
pupils the opportunity to go swimming free of charge on Saturdays
since last February.
The response has been overwhelming and Mr. Tony Wade, Manager of
the Nicolson Lewis Sports centre says: “It has been great
to have so many young people and their families making use of the
pools throughout the Western Isles. This initiative has been a great
success. It has got more young people more active at a time when
we are all concerned about the need for a healthy lifestyle.
Mr. Donald A Macleod, Integration Manager for New Community Schools
commented: “It is excellent that young people have grasped
this opportunity to benefit not only their personal health but also
to get out with their friends at the weekend. This is part of our
programme of Health Promoting Schools which focuses on the needs
of young people and their communities.
The free swim Saturdays were an extension of the successful Motiv8
card scheme that allowed all secondary pupils free access to pools.
