| Education has always been
about encouraging children to grow and at Tong Primary they’re
literally doing just that, thanks to a new School/Community Conservation
Garden.
The garden was the brainchild of pupils, parents and teachers at
the school to replace the eyesore that was left when the old school
house was demolished in January 2001.
An extensive fundraising campaign was organised and the school
raised the necessary £23,000 to convert the wasteland into
a garden facility to be used by the school and the local community.
Highlights of the garden area include mosaic designs constructed
by the schoolchildren, herb plots for each class, a wild area designed
to attract birds and insects, a sitting area with a cultivated lawn
and a polytunnel for growing plants and vegetables.
The scheme is not only a first rate educational facility and community
asset but has also provided local employment.
The children intend to sell the vegetables grown in the polytunnel
and raise money for school funds. Some of the vegetables and herbs
are already being used by catering staff for the school dinners.
Local Councillor Ian Macleod said: “This is an extremely
innovative and exciting initiative which provides a wonderful asset
for the school and local community. I am particularly pleased that
the project has provided local employment. This kind of scheme shows
what can be done when communities, the private sector and local
agencies work together.”
The official opening of the Tong School/Community Conservation
garden is at 2pm tomorrow (Friday 20th June). You are invited to
send a representative.
