Over fifty fifth year pupils from the Nicolson Institute and Sir
E. Scott Secondary Schools have received pre-driving training as
part of the Western Isles Community Safety Project.
The ‘Pre-Driving Project’ aims to provide a training
course for pupils before they sit their driving test; each session
will cover broad areas including the mechanics of a safe car, driving
instruction, the law and driving, basic road safety issues, and
how misuse of alcohol and drugs can affect driving.
The sessions were intended to encourage pre-driver safety and students
received a ‘Basic Pre Driver Training Course’ certificate
on successful completion of the project.
The incentive for providing this training is supported by knowledge
that new drivers make up the minority of licence holders; just 10%,
but are involved in 29% of accidents.
The course was funded from resources allocated to Community Safety
by the Comhairle and the Scottish Executive.
