| Cllr. Angus Nicolson,
Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Environmental Services
Committee, has added his voice to calls for improved safety measures
for traffic in the Minch, following the sinking of the "Jambo".
The ship, carrying zinc concentrate, sank last Sunday after running
aground on the Summer Isles.
Cllr Nicolson is calling for early discussions between the Comhairle
and Highland Council to agree a course of action to reduce the risk
of further incident.
"I hope that we can agree to demand compulsory pilotage in
the Minch for all large vessels and all vessels with hazardous cargoes,
as this would seem to be the only way to ensure our pristine waters
and environment are going to be properly protected. Whilst I understand
that Highland Council favour the deep water route beyond the Hebrides,
there are occasions when using the Minch is safer, and with compulsory
pilotage we can make it safer still."
