has welcomed the nine-month halt on Tc-99 discharges from Sellafield
announced in Norway by UK Environment Minister Margaret Beckett.
Chairman of Environmental Services, Cllr. Angus Nicolson, said:
“This move reflects the concerns that we have expressed over
the possibility of Tc-99 in the local environment. I would now urge
Sellafield to use this time on developing technology to allow for
land storage which would help to protect our marine environment.
The timing is particularly apt in a week when we have seen a dangerous
cargo released into waters on the west coast. As well as tightening
up on discharges from Sellafield it is high time to increase safety
measures on traffic in the Minch. I make no apologies for again
calling for compulsory pilotage for dangerous cargoes in our waters.
In addition we have to have some kind of reliable notification system
of dangerous cargoes so that the relevant authorities have the necessary
information”.
