| A range of issues relating
to Community gain were discussed at the inaugural meeting of the Alternative
and Renewable Energy: Community Benefit Member/Officer Working Group
set up by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
The group was set up by the Policy and Resources Committee and
will make recommendations on the way forward to the September meeting
of P&R.
Cllr Archie Campbell, who was appointed Chairman, said: “This
is a short term working group which will look at a range of issues
relating to Community gain in the Western Isles from the development
of the Renewables Industry. There are a number of complex issues
to be tackled and we will be commissioning expert independent advice
where appropriate.
The opportunity is there for significant and long lasting local
gains to accrue from the development of the alternative and renewables
industry but it is in everyone’s interests that the issues
are closely examined in order to achieve the maximum gain for the
Western Isles.
The potential of the Western Isles as a key player in the Alternative
and Renewable energy sector is well known but we will require the
support of our representatives at a Scottish, UK and European level
who also have an important role to play.”
