Trianaid, the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar residential home in Carinish,
North Uist, was officially opened today to mark its successful redevelopment
after a £600,000 investment.
The twenty-year-old home was previously deemed increasingly unsuitable
for those people who require a higher level of residential care.
Following its makeover, however, Trianaid now provides all its facilities
under one roof, offering improved access and services to staff and
residents.
Trianaid’s redevelopment was part of a joint initiative between
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and NHS Eileanan Siar to improve the quality
of care facilities throughout the Islands. In the two decades of
its operation, 80 people have lived at the home in a long-term capacity,
with a further 55 receiving respite care; some coming in several
times each year.
Director of Social Work, Malcolm Smith, praised the unparalleled
commitment of Trianaid’s staff at the ceremony for their effective
teamwork over the years, which has contributed to a greatly enhanced
quality of life for all their residents. Mr. Smith also praised
the work of Rev. John Smith, formerly chaplain at Lochmaddy Hospital,
who carried out the opening. Rev. Smith has been a frequent visitor
to Trianaid over the years.
Murdo Macleod, Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean’s Social Work
Committee, revealed that the completed Trianaid project is but one
of a line of projects aimed at boosting care facilities in the Islands.
This includes the development of care in South Uist, again with
the added assistance of NHS Eileanan Siar; the future planning of
Harris House, and improvements at both Dun Berisay and Ardseileach
Residential Unit. In the longer term, a major upgrading of St Brendan’s
is also envisaged
Mr. Macleod said: : “With a combination of this renovated
building and the calibre of staff to deliver, we have a service
in which the community can take pride.”
