| Angus Campbell, Vice
Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, has condemned plans which
have emerged concerning the future of the cargo vessel MV Jambo.
Fears have risen over decisions made to dispose its salvaged cargo
of zinc sulphide in the Atlantic, to the West of the Hebrides. It
has also been indicated that the cargo will undergo a filtration
process in the waters of mid Minch, and abandon contaminated water
there. It is predicted that as a result, some 3% to 5% of particle
loss, of which cadmium is a constituent, will remain suspended in
the water column for a considerable length of time.
Mr. Campbell had previously voiced his concern to local agencies
over the vessel’s possible detrimental effect on the marine
environment; including fishing, aquaculture and tourism. He says
that ‘These new developments pose a substantial threat to
the local economy and environment.’
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have now formally opposed the plans to
dispose the MV Jambo and her cargo in the waters of the Western
Isles to protect its industries, maintain the fragile economy and
for the validity of the procedures proposed to be examined. Cllr.
Angus Campbell has requested that these fears be addressed, and
has insisted that the Comhairle be to be actively involved with
any future operations.
