| The Comhairle learned
formally today that the Norwegian company Egersund Net AS has abandoned
plans to locate a new net-washing facility in Lewis. The disappointment
comes in the wake of other planned job losses in the aquaculture
and related industries and despite a substantial amount of work
to attract new business to the islands.
It is understood that the company has claimed that changes to their
market would make the planned operation unprofitable.
Chairman of the Sustainable Development Committee, Councillor Archie
Campbell, commented:
‘This is a further blow to the economic prospects of the
islands and a bitter disappointment for all of those who worked
so hard to attract this business to Lewis. We are committed to further
initiatives to attract a wide base of economic activity to our islands.’
Local Councillor for North Lochs, Alex Macintosh, said:
‘This is a missed opportunity for us at a time when new jobs
are so desperately needed. I very much regret that we were not able
to attract this kind of operation to our area. I hope that we will
be able to find other investors who are prepared to bring new work
with them. ’
