HIE’s new Supply Partnership Procurement system could spell
disaster for the economy of the Western Isles, the Vice Convener
of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Angus Campbell, and local MP, Calum
Macdonald, warned today.
Mr. Campbell and Mr. Macdonald have sent a joint letter to Jim
Hunter, Chairman of Highland & Islands Enterprise, expressing
the genuine concerns of the local business community over the strategy.
They highlighted a lack of consultation with local service providers,
anger concerning the development of the contracts, and the more
pressing issue of a knock on effect towards Island economy.
Money would be lost and employment for island people at risk, it
was claimed. The large, national companies that procurement commonly
benefits would remove employment away from the Western Isles, expand
in time and thus potentially destroy the fragile economy inherent
in rural areas.
The Vice Convener and Calum Macdonald MP have urged HIE to reassess
their strategy in light of their concerns, for the benefit of the
local business community and the future of the Western Isles.
