New Sports Centre Taking Shape

30 July 2003

Construction of the new £6.8m Sports Centre is now well under way. The steel frame is starting to take shape and this phase of the building is due to be completed by mid -September. The funding for the project has come from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, sportscotland and Western Isles Enterprise. The sportscotland Lottery Award was the largest in Scotland in 2002.

Facilities will include:-

  • 25m by 13m pool - 50% wider than at present, with a moveable floor. This will allow the depth of the deep end of the pool to be adjusted to any depth up to 3.8m.
  • Toddler Pool for pre-schoolers, with built in play features.
  • Games Hall will be twice the current size.
  • Creche and linked Soft Play area.
  • The Fitness Suite will be 50% larger and will be fully equipped with a range of the most up to date cardio-vascular and strength training machines.
  • Multi- Sports Hall - suitable for dance, keep fit, martial arts etc. This is an important element of the project, allowing greater community access to the facility during the day.
  • 2 Squash Courts
  • Café

Malcolm J. Graham, Chairman of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Arts & Leisure Committee, said:
“I am confident that this will be one of the best modern sports facilities in the North of Scotland. The facilities offered and the services provided will be equally first rate. This is a theme we have consistently highlighted and I am proud to see the sporting future of our community so successfully secured.”

Alastair Dempster, Chairman of sportscotland, added: "We are delighted that the Nicolson Lewis Sports Centre redevelopment is underway supported by an award of £1.5M from the sportscotland Lottery Fund Sports Facilities Programme. Our aim is to increase access to quality sports facilities for communities across Scotland and I am sure when completed, this new facility will be a great boost for the sporting future of the area."

WIE Chief Executive, Donnie Macaulay said the Enterprise Company is delighted to see construction and development of the new sports centre is on schedule and progress is well on track for completion of the contract.

The building is due to be completed by May / June 2004.
