The recent series of open days held throughout the islands by the
Comhairle and the Forestry Commission have been hailed as a great
success with more than 100 people attending to give their views
on how woodlands can contribute positively to life in the Western
Isles.
The crofting community in particular were well represented. Around
60% of those contributing had a crofting interest.
Councillor Archie Campbell, Chairman of the Comhairle’s Sustainable
Development Committee said: "I cannot stress enough how important
it is that the views of the public are taken into account in developing
a strategy for woodlands in the Western Isles. Its success will
depend on the willingness of landowners, crofters and individuals
to carry out schemes which meet the aims of such a strategy and
these aims must reflect the needs of local people. The Comhairle
would like to thank all those who contributed to the consultation."
The Comhairle will consider progress towards a Woodland Strategy
at its next series of committee meetings at the end of August.
