British Nuclear Fuels Plc (BNFL) have given a presentation to members
of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Environmental Services Committee
today (Wednesday). Chairman Angus Nicolson commented:
“Whilst I welcome open debate with BNFL and I’m grateful
for their presentation I remain extremely sceptical about the real
environmental impact of Sellafield over the past forty years. We
will continue to monitor closely the activities of BNFL and the
possible implications for the people and environment of the Western
Isles.”
Cllr. Nicolson welcomed a report from the Food Standards Agency
which showed levels of TC-99 in farm salmon to be the same as levels
of radioactivity in those of wild salmon. Cllr. Nicolson added:
“These findings are certainly welcome news. Nevertheless
we will not be complacent about this matter and look forward to
continued testing by way of reassurance.”
