Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Highway Maintenance and Building
Maintenance DLOs have been given a clean bill of health by the Scottish
Executive with the announcement today that the Section 19 notice
on the operations has been lifted.
.The news was greeted with delight at the Comhairle offices. Cllr.
Donald Macdonald, Chairman of the Commercial Operations Board, said:
“This is excellent news for the Comhairle and for the Western
Isles. I am pleased that the considerable efforts of Members, Trade
Unions and employees of the Comhairle have paid off and that we
have turned around what was a struggling operation into one that
provides high quality services for the people of the Western Isles
whilst meeting our Best Value requirements. I am particularly pleased
for the workers in the DLOs for whom the past couple of years have
been a difficult time and I would like to pay tribute to their commitment
and patience in working with us to achieve this success. I would
also highlight the efforts of the Director of Corporate Services
and her team who have worked tirelessly towards securing a sustainable
future for the DSOs. It is teamwork that has turned this situation
around and we can now move forward in maintaining good quality jobs
for local people, providing high levels of support and satisfaction
to local residents and ensuring a healthy surplus for the Comhairle”.
The Section 19 notice was served on the Comhairle by the Scottish
Executive in November 2001
