Siar’s Social Work Committee today gave the green light
for a state-of-the art residential care facility for South Uist.
Councillors approved the design of the Care Unit and the project
now proceeds to tender stage.
Social Work Chairman Cllr. Murdo Macleod said:
“This will be a first rate care facility for South Uist
that will be a credit to the whole of the Western Isles. We want
to enable more people to stay longer in their own homes but when
residential care is required it is essential that people throughout
the Islands have access to the best of care and that is what we
aim to provide with this project. I want to pay tribute to the
local community who have participated fully in the consultation
process and I am confident that this facility will meet the aspirations
of local people. The Comhairle is determined that the standards
of residential care will meet the expectations of local communities
and allow people who require care the dignity, comfort and attention
that they deserve”.
The Care Unit has been designed by the Comhairle’s Technical
Services Department and will feature 18 accommodation units, guest
rooms, library, greenhouse and 3 garden areas.
Local Councillor Angus Macdonald said: I am pleased to see this
project coming to the point of fruition. Our community has been
pressing the case with the Comhairle for a long time for improved
facilities for the social and health care of the people of South
Uist. We have been engaged closely in the planning of this service
and now look forward to seeing it established. The South Uist
Care Development will provide a state-of-the-art facility for
people residing there, as well as supporting the wider community
through day care and related services. At the same time, the new
building respects our heritage”.
The original Daliburgh Hospital, built more than a century ago,
has been preserved within the design for the new care centre.
