The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has welcomed the publication
of the Gaelic Bill. Cllr. Alex MacDonald said: “The Comhairle
is pleased that the Executive has delivered on a pre election promise
and welcomes the publication of the draft Bill at the opening of
the Royal National Mod at Oban. The Gaelic Bill will be a major
step forward in the revitalization of the language and is evidence
of the commitment of the Executive to the language. The Comhairle
will work closely with Bord na Gaidhlig and the Executive to ensure
that the Bill meets the aspirations of the Gaelic community in Scotland.
The Gaelic language is a unique asset for the Western Isles and
clearly provides an opportunity for economic development. Most notable
will be the opportunities in Gaelic broadcasting and particularly
the development of a Gaelic digital Channel. The Comhairle is clearly
of the view that the natural location for the station would be the
Western Isles. Not only would this provide a boost to the local
economy, it would also be a clear signal of government’s determination
to assist the islands and further commitment to the Gaelic language.
We have the facilities, we have the people, all we need is the opportunity.”
