| A better deal for the
public and for the environment in managing waste - that’s
the commitment from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as consultants were
appointed yesterday to implement the first phase of the local
authority’s waste strategy plan.
The move follows the Comhairle’s success in securing additional
funding from the Scottish Executive of £902k for recycling
initiatives.
Environmental Services Chairman Angus Nicolson said: “This
is a new phase in improving waste management and represents a
substantial investment in future developments. Better waste management
means a better deal for local people and the environment and the
Comhairle is determined to maximise efforts in improving our recycling
levels and reducing waste levels. We have made significant improvements
recently in waste management in the Islands including enabling
the public to play their part in recycling bottles, glass, paper
and other materials. We will continue to improve how we deal with
waste leading to a better environment and reduced costs.”
SLR Consultants will undertake the design of the Comhairle's
new integrated processing system for biodegradeable waste which
it is hoped will be in operation by the end of 2005.
