Western Isles Quality Of Life Initiative

Sustainability Themes

  1. Resources are used efficiently and waste and pollution minimised.
  2. The diversity of wildlife, landscapes and landforms is enhanced and promoted for future generations.
  3. The cultural and historical heritage is enhanced and promoted.
  4. Where possible, local needs are met locally.
  5. Everyone has access to good and affordable food, water, shelter and fuel.
  6. Everyone has the opportunity to undertake satisfying work in a diverse economy.
  7. People’s good health is protected by creating safe, clean, pleasant environments and health services which emphasise prevention of illness as well as proper care for the sick.
  8. Levels of illness and health damaging behaviours are maintained at as low a level as possible.
  9. Access to facilities, services, goods and other people is not achieved at the expense of the environment, or limited to those with cars.
  10. People live without fear of crime, persecution or discrimination because of their personal beliefs, race, gender, sexuality or disability.
  11. Everyone has access to and is encouraged to develop the skills, knowledge and information needed to play a full part in society.
  12. All sections of the community are empowered and encouraged to participate in decision making.
  13. Opportunities for culture, leisure and recreation are readily available to all.
  14. Development of the built environment should be at an appropriate scale and form, valuing diversity and local distinctiveness.
  15. Links are developed with other parts of the world to share best practice and exchange ideas.
