The Scottish Environmental Protection
Agency (SEPA) has published the annual Waste Arising
survey for all Scottish Local Authorities for the 2003/04
period. Each Authority Area has a separate
report outlining the Waste Management activities during
the period.
In this year’s report
the Western Isles shows a slight reduction in the volume
of waste generated but a substantial increase in the
level of Waste recycling. Overall in 2003/04 the Waste
generated in the Western Isles was 21,793 tonnes down
from the 2002/03 figure of 21,963 tonnes.
Recycling shows a substantial
increase from the 2002/03 figure of 1,311 tonnes to
2,129 tonnes in 2003/04. This represents an increase
of over 60% in Recycling during the survey period.
