First Kerbside Collection
12 April 2005

Stornoway’s first ever Kerbside Recycling Collection took place in the Cearns area of the town on April 12th. The Collection was the first to be completed under the Kerbside Collection Pilot Scheme. The Pilot Scheme is designed to test out a number of different collecting systems to find the most appropriate for use in the town. Due to run until the end of June, the Pilot will help Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to make a decision on rolling out Kerbside Collections to all households in Stornoway.

Joining in with the collection were members of the Waste Aware Team who were on hand to offer advice and suggestions to householders and hear comments on how practical the systems were. There were one or two minor problems in presenting the Recyclables for collection but these were quickly resolved. The problems related to items that could not be offered for Recycling, the Waste Aware Team were quickly able to address the issues with the Householders.

The second collection was in the Manor Park area the following day. Again the Waste Aware Team were on hand to help Householders and offer any advice that was needed. The two collections brought in just under 1.5 tonnes of Recyclable material to the Bennadrove recycling Centre.

A big thank you to all Households involved for making this an easy and successful collection.
