Waste Aware Mascot Design Competition
04 May 2005

The Waste Aware Western Isles Team launched a mascot competition in February to help them promote Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in the Western Isles.

A total of 10 schools and 107 pupils entered the competition, which was open to all school pupils in the Western Isles between P4 and S6 . The high standard of entries made it very difficult for the judges to decide a winner but the design by Marina Maciver, a Class 6 pupil, from Tong Primary School caught the judges attention as it was eye-catching and could be developed for use in Waste Aware promotions. The winning design is made up of materials which can be recycled in the Western Isles. Marina has scooped the prize of £50 gift vouchers and also £250 vouchers for her school.

Councillor Ian M Macleod, Vice-chair, Environmental Services Committee, said: “This is an excellent way to get children thinking about recycling and how it reduces the amount of waste that goes to the landfill sites which helps the environment.”
