Waste Aware Western Isles News

FINNISH AND ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL EXCHANGE GROUP

For the past three years the Nicolson Institute has had a joint project with a school in Finland (Lievestoureen Lukio, at Lievestour) and one in Italy (Liceo Scientifico Statale Riccardo Nuzzi in Andrea) to look at environmental matters. The first year (last year) looked at energy, this year the theme was water and next year waste management. For all topics they look at the current situation, problems associated with and possible improvements. The data collected by each school is circulated to the other schools and students can then make some comparisons.

For this years meeting, two teaching staff from both Finland and Italy visited Stornoway. Finnish students involved with the programme also visited the island to return a visit which the Nicolson made to Finland last June.

While they were here they looked at various aspects of our environment and also held a planning meeting to agree the work which is needed for the last topic on waste management. To help them with the waste management theme the visitors, students and staff from the Nicolson Institute were given a presentation in the Council Offices Stornoway on development of the new waste management facilities and future recycling programme in the Western Isles.

Markku Hemmi, Headmaster at Lievestoureen Lukio (senior school) in Lievestoure, Finland is seen here presenting a plate to Councillor Ian Macleod, Vice-Chair of Environmental Services Committee, along with Uisdean Fraser, Head of Community Services and Stuart Oakley, Teacher, Nicolson Institute.
