Waste Aware Western Isles News

Marina sees her winning creation brought to life!

The Waste Aware Western Isles Team launched a mascot competition over a year ago to help them promote Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in the Western Isles.

A total of 10 schools and 107 pupils entered the competition, which was open to all school pupils in the Western Isles between P4 and S6. The winning entry was by Marina Maciver, now in Class 7 in Tong Primary School. The design has been developed for use in Waste Aware promotions and last week the Waste Aware Team visited Tong Primary School to show Marina her design in the form of a life size cutout. Marina and her class mates were impressed by the mascot which was taller than most of them! The cut out which is over 5 foot tall will form part of the Waste Aware exhibits in the education/visitor centre floor of the new Creed Park Environmental Centre, which is currently being built outside Stornoway.

All that remains now is to find a name for the mascot so if anyone can think of a suitable name for it please contact the Waste Aware Helpline on 709900 or e-mail the Team at recycling@cne-siar.gov.uk.
