| Environmental Studies Policy
Curriculum Area: Environmental Studies
Policy Leader: Mrs Margaret Martin
We endorse the 5-14 Environmental Studies National Guidelines {dated 2000}.
LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGIES
In the Primary classes Environmental Studies is integrated into the curriculum both through the thematic approach, discrete and parallel approaches when appropriate. A balanced curriculum is provided through the use of a 7 year programme.{Appendix 1}which leads into the S1/S2 programme. Aspectsof Environmental Studies are also addressed in our Language, Expressive Arts and Health Programmes. In the Secondary department Environmental Studies is taught discretely in History, Geography, Science, Home Economics, Modern Studies and Technology with ICT permeating all aspects of the curriculum.
It is recognised that the 3 main skills-Preparing/Planning for tasks, Carrying out tasks, Reviewing and reporting on tasks- are common to each area of Environmental Studies. Throughout the school a wide variety of differentiated learning activities are offered, giving pupils opportunities to develop skills appropriate to age and ability. Pupils at all stages are encouraged to use ICT resources.
ASSESSMENT, RECORDING AND REPORTING
Assessment will take account of strengths, development needs and next steps, the prime purpose being to improve pupil’s learning. Attainment Outcomes and strands provide the framework for the assessment of knowledge, understanding and skills. A variety of assessment activities is used to gather evidence of pupil’s attainment. Folders and collections of work support assessment, reportingand planning next steps. Pupils participate in the process of planning next steps. In reports we comment on the progress of each pupil in meeting the attainment targets of the Guidelines. In Environmental Studies, as in other curricular areas, effort is reported on. Primary/secondary liaison meetings are held regularly to share information on pupil performance and progress.

An inventory of Environmental Studies resources is being compiled and should be ready by June 2005. Resources are kept in the upper floor storeroom, in the staff work base, appropriate classrooms, the library storeroom and the main library.
