Curriculum Area: PSE/ PSD / Health Education{ Health Education, Drug Education and Sexuality and Relationship Education}
Policy Leader: Mrs Joan-Anne Smith
We endorse the National Guidelines 5-14 Health Education and the Regional Guidance and Programme of Study. We also acknowledge the advice contained in the other national documents listed on page 2 in the Regional Guidelines.
LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGIES
In the Primary classes Health Education is integrated into the curriculum in a variety of ways : as part of an Environmental Studies theme, in RME, PSD and Home Economics, P.E., Art & Design and Circle Time. In the Secondary department Health Education is integrated into the PSD ( 1 hour per week including Interface sessions) and Home Economics programme. Pupils, when appropriate, work in social and mixed ability groups. At other times pupils work on Attainment Targets from the same level, with differentiated and/or extended tasks, materials and/or outcomes meeting their needs. At times pupils work as a class, for example, when discussing an issue, when viewing a video or television programme or when reporting on group activities. When appropriate, individual visitors play a role in PSE/PSD/Health Education. Liaison and cooperation with external agencies e.g.– Health Promotion, Police, Community Education, Careers Scotland – enhance the implementation of our PSE/PSD/Health Education policy through contributions to our PSE/PSD/Health Education programme.
ASSESSMENT, RECORDING AND REPORTING
Assessment will take account of strengths, development needs and next steps, the prime purpose being to improve pupil’s learning. Attainment Outcomes and strands provide the framework for the assessment of knowledge, understanding and skills. Evidence of pupils’attainment is gathered in a variety of assessment activities - {Health Education Guide for Teachers and Managers page 28}. Folders and collections of work support assessment, reporting and planning next steps. In reports we comment on the progress of each pupil in meeting the attainment targets of the Guidelines. Effort is reported on as in other curricular areas.
RESOURCES
Our main resource is the Regional Guidance and Programme of Study. An inventory of PSE/PSD/Health Education resources is being compiled and should be kept in the staff work base, appropriate classrooms, library storeroom and main library and should be ready by June 2005. Resources are kept in the staff work base, appropriate classrooms and in the library storeroom.
THE ROLE OF PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
We seek to establish a strong partnership between home and school as we consider this essential to the success of a meaningful Health Education programme and the development of the school as a health promoting school. Parents are informed of our Health Education programme through School Board and PTA involvement, curriculum evenings, Parent evenings, reporting to parents and school correspondence.
HOMEWORK
The setting of homework is in accordance with the school Homework Policy.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
We ensure that all pupils, irrespective of belief, race, culture, class, gender and disability are provided with an education which allows them to develop their potential.
EVALUATION AND REVIEW
This policy document is the result of collaboration and discussion amongst staff in our school.
