| Modern Languages Policy
Curriculum Area: Modern Languages
Policy Leader :
Mrs L Reeves.
We endorse the 5-14 National Guidelines and acknowledge the support and advice given by HMIE in Standards and Quality report: Primary and Secondary Schools 1994-1998: in Modern Languages.
Learning & Teaching Strategies
French is taught in the school from P5 – S2. The main vehicle for teaching the language is the Route Nationale course. As an introduction to French pupils are taught using the Longmans Primary French and Le Club courses, Modern Languages in the Primary School.
French is used as the main language in most classroom activities.
Whole class, group, paired and individual teaching approaches are used throughout the learning process. Pupils are encouraged to learn vocabulary in context and thereby increase and develop their fluency. Independent learning is promoted through differentiation ( input & outcome) once core material has been understood. To improve the overall quality of the course offered Modern Languages staff meet on a termly basis to ensure continuity and progress.
Assessment, Recording and Reporting
Continuous assessment is an ongoing process. Formative assessment is used to build up an overall picture about pupil performance. Summative assessment sits alongside formative assessment as a confirmation. All assessment, whether it is unit tests, vocabulary tests, class/homework are used to inform planning of future work and provides feedback for teachers, pupils and parents.
Results of assessments are recorded by the teacher. This information is disseminated to pupils immediately and to parents via reports or on Parent/Teacher consultation evenings.
