Bridges, Causeways and Ferries

Other Causeways

A number of minor causeways play an important role in the inter-island route through the Uists.

The 220 metre causeway across across Loch Kildonan in South Uist is one of the earliest such crossings, having been constructed for cart traffic many decades ago.

It was improved to a 3-metre roadway as part of a township scheme about 40 years ago - and further resurfaced, strengthened and armoured after suffering storm damage in 1984 when more than £40,000 was spent to maintain the vital village link.
