Principal Role:
Inspections identify the need to budget for the management and maintenance of bridges, which deteriorate through time. Ever increasing traffic is subjecting old bridges to loads far beyond those for which they were originally designed.
Impact on Public Safety:
Bridges have to deal with a variety of different weather conditions including floods, freezing and thawing, water seepage, traffic loading and vibration, so their condition is always changing.

Maintain public parks, public open spaces and floral displays, sports pitches and other outdoor sports facilities

Health & Safety Policy to be applied with regard to operation of plant and machinery in public areas.

Oversee the provision of passenger transport throughout the Western Isles.

Principal Role:
Provision and maintenance of lighting on streets and other public places for the purposes of public safety, road safety and general security.
Impact on Public Safety:
Adequate and suitable lighting is essential in public places in times of darkness to provide security for the public and safety on roads and footpaths for travellers

The squads can deal with minor safety matters quickly & efficiently and can help the police and other emergency services to clear roads following an incident, thus minimising the disruption to the public.

Principal Role:
To manage and provide advice on all development control matters associated with future shape of road network and to administer list of public roads. This service also deals with enquiries about adopted roads that are on the official Council List of Public Roads.
Impact on Public Safety:
Promotes road safety, for example if a client wishes to develop a road, certain procedures such as the visibility of other cars must be addressed.

Regular safety inspections of footways and roads based on a national code of practice and repair of safety defects. Administration of calls regarding safety from police, public (potholes, accidents, etc.). Implementing planned maintenance and minor improvement works.

Principal Role:
First point of contact for the public, councillors, schools and other agencies concerned with road safety. To reduce to number of road accidents in the Western Isles Monitoring accident data, surveying roads and suggesting solutions to improve road safety. Close liaison with the Police in a safety partnership and investigating road accidents.

A risk assessment of the network is carried to determine priority salting routes.
Impact on Public Safety:
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar aims to assist road users in adverse winter conditions by providing a service which is considered reasonable to prevent snow and ice endangering the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles.
